Launch of the Tasmanian Skills Strategy

David Hind, Chair of the Skills Tasmania Board welcomed the Premier and Minister for Education, David Bartlett.

Sam’s wandering about with a camera so I think I’ll stop using jasjam photos and use his, there’s not enough light in these rooms :)

Bartlett’s speech touched on the economic downturn and the future of the Tasmanian economy being sound relies on investing, building the foundation through skills, infrastructure and something else that I missed. Tas Tomorrow reforms got a mention, highlighting the need for post year 10 qualifications in the job market now and into the future.
An Innovation startegy will be developed. Also an infrastructure plan: roads to sustainable energy to optic fibre. Today is the third key strategy – the Tas Skills Strategy to bring together government initiatives in skills. 3 Ps are Participation, Productivity and Population. Ten key areas with ambitious (according to him, I can’t read the slides from here) targets. http://www.skills.tas.gov.au/skillstas/tasskillsstrategy

Plans include more projects like the TICT one, and more elearning (well commonwealth funds, David mentioned a figure but I promptly forgot) projects. Targets are online with baseline data available.
