Last year the Toolkits blog ran its course and dried up (rather like a mountain stream in summer). There has been much exciting stuff happening that I would like to blog about from a professional angle (personal stuff is covered elsewhere). I’d like to have this blog as something my teams may read, and I can refer people too.

Here is the link: http://www.otheredge.com.au/klogs/blog/

The post following will be moved across when I set up a new blog over the weekend.

In a post about mobile workforces, this quote caught my eye:

“Creativity is no longer about which companies have the most visionary executives, but which have the most compelling architecture of participation. That is, which companies make it easy, interesting and rewarding for a wide range of contributors to offer ideas, solve problems and improve products” - Tim O’Reilly, O’Reilly Media

How do I foster this environment in my direct teams?

  • consciously plan activities that will encourage joint and collaborative action by participants
  • by role modelling idea offering myself
  • opening up our ideas and team actions for consideration and continuous improvement

This week’s action (only 3 days left but anyhow…)

gather several, and then select two ‘problems’ for consideration and action. Place on agenda for team meeting next week.

Recently in a workshop Marie Jasinski intorduced me to the notion of writing a 32 word summary, then reducing it 16, then to 8, then to 4, then to 2 - a game called essence. To be able to pull together the essence of a learning plan into 6 words is a very appropriate challenge as today I’m participating/ coordinating a bootcamp for colleagues. The idea is to get together for two days of intense work on a learning activity design or learning object creation project, and have time for peer critique and sharing. This morning we also had a demonstration of the new version of Elluminate.

So my learning plan for 2 days?

Here’s my effort - imagine, plan, build, reflect, evaluate, share.

Some from Jay Cross as a comment on Mark Oehlert’s post: The first one tickled my fancy - very applicable to vocational training :-)

do it. screw up. try again.

try. reflect. share with others. remember.

watch. listen. feel. mimic. perform. teach.

The project was a research project to see what was involved - because of the diverse environments we work in, and different ways we enrol students it’s not simple. You have to draw in the course enquiry, counselling, enrolment and payment as part of the whole workflow. It involved collaboration with the Student Admin System people and this gave a very practical perspective to it.

The team looked at a whole range of scenarios about what might happen and the implications of various choices. Potential problems such as overenrolments and recognition of prior qualifications (eg for prerequisites) were uncovered. Some enrolment types are a lot easier, while some manual intervention may be required in other courses. Tension between need for issuing invoices and upfront payment and the implications for finance processes. Options for off-campus enrolment through mobile wireless could be a possibility and raises some IT security concerns. Commercial shortcourses are likely to be first cab off the rank next year :-)
